Professional Training in Physical Theatre
This is a two- year track of study (with additional third year program) for people with experience in the basics of theatre and movement and for beginners who are interested in obtaining professional training as actor - creators of physical theatre. Students of this track will have a four -day study program on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
Once a month, students will present a group exercise, based on independent work, to develop imagination and cultivate thinking as creative artists. Towards the completion of their studies, the students will prepare a final project together with the supervision of the class facilitator. In mid May, there will be a performance for an audience.
Prerequisites:
Personal interview

All participants must designate extra time, outside of class time to work on presentations so that it will be an artistic accomplishment, which will illustrate and express the original theatrical conceptions of the students.

Physical Preparation and Dissection of Dramatic Movement:
This course deals with the universal laws of movement as a key to the art of acting and to the dramatic dynamics.

-Additional tools for a wide utilization of the total architecture of the body in relationship to its movement in space

The Neutral Mask:
This course deals with the discovery of the full potential of the body while enjoying an exploration of the here and now.
-Exploration of the limits and resistances in personal movement
-Clarification of movement and realization of the freedom to experience and to act the stage reality
-Acting with different full masks and constructing physical situations of the Theatre of the Absurd

Discovering and Researching Movement in Nature:
The participants will work on using animals and basic materials and colors as inspirations for dramatic movement in space. They will also focus on the personification of objects for design and for operating them as theatrical characters.

This course deals with using props and objects in action theatre in the empty space.

Music as a Partner to Acting:
-The silent theatre
-The first steps in working without words
-Basic tenets for the actor/creator: action, listening, focus, story construction, originality,, openness, tempo, all of these through nonverbal improvisations with musical accompaniment
Developing listening skills for different types of music which the actor can use as a score that can provide inspiration or text

The Storyteller in Physical Theatre:
-Basic tools and techniques for creating action theater in an empty space
-Emphasis on the virtuosity of the actor as a performer/storyteller using text and movement and as responsible for constructing the dramatic situation

Designing Characters in Physical Theatre:
-Building theatrical characters
-Blending the actor’s imagination with an observation of human nature
-Creating a variety of characters; one actor acting two different characters
-Virtuosity of quick change in the enactment of the two different characters

Second year - the actor as the total creator
Study Topics
Body Preparation:
acrobatics and acrobalance - continuing studies, dance and creative movement - continuing studies
Vocal training:
recognition, development, and experimentation in the creative fundamentals which produce a unique voice for each actor; studies will cover: anatomy, correct breathing, the relationship between breathing and movement, the vocal placements of emotions, the expansion of the vocal range, and the creation of group harmony
Cabaret:
a theatrical laboratory for the creation of a small theatrical performance in an intimate atmosphere; it will include an interaction between different trends and techniques in order to create an original stage language using such mediums as: cabaret of objects, puppets and shadows, lighting, magic, make up, music, etc., group skits will be created in the class
Chorus, Hero:
a primary connection of theatre to the world of ceremony and ritual, the power of the single actor opposite the group expressed through stage movement, the balance and unbalance of space, fundamentals of Greek tragedy where the chorus has and integral part in the creation of movement and vocal effect and through acting, creates the dimension of time, rhythm and stage composition
The Grotesque Buffoon:
a style of tragic - comic acting which is nourished by lust and desire; theatrically, the buffoon is characterized by an exaggeratedly distorted body and by characteristic costume and props (the body as a mask); using their physical architecture and the poetic vocabulary of their imagination, each student will design his or her personal buffoon and will construct and act in tragic - comic situations; this style provides the basis for the creation of the dramatic clown
The Human Comedy:
acting with half masks of the commedia della arte and other genres, discovering the power that the mask endows on the actor which includes the freedom to conduct a dialogue with the world of creatures contained within the mask and to conduct a different form of communication with the audience; principles of acting in the human comedy in both tragic and comic situations, masks that employ the verbal dimension, constructing scenes based also on classic texts
The Dramatic Clown:
from circus to theatre, a tragic - comic style which enables the actor to discover his or her inner clown, the ability to be silly, naïve, poetic, and a virtuoso, all of this is derived from the enjoyment and strong desire to stay on the stage; "the flop" - the failure of the clown as an incitement to action, constructing personal and group skits of the lonely clown and the clown troupe
Final Project:
each student will receive a "given", an open sentence which will serve as the basis for his or her final work; the student will be solely responsible for the execution of this task; he or she can use other students in the creation; this project must reflect the graduating student's mastery of the theatrical language and of original theatrical conception
